Bedding Plants

Bedding plants are often referred to as Annuals.  Annuals have four outstanding qualities that should appeal to any gardener: they're colorful; they're incredibly varied, with a color and style for every situation; the best are among the most elegant of plants; and they give you quick results.

An annual is a garden plant that completes its life cycle in one growing season.  This means the seed is planted in the spring and begins to grow (germinate).  The plant then grows, flowers, sets seeds, and dies (usually after the first fall frost).  There are hardy annuals, half-hardy annuals, and tender annuals - all classified according to how well they tolerate cool soils and temperatures.  Some gardeners may even plant tender perennials, and use them as annuals, depending on the zone.

Here is a list of some of the annuals we generally have in stock in the spring at Grass Root Gardens - Ageratum, Alyssum, Cosmos, Dahlias, Dianthus, Gazania, Lobelia, Marigolds, Pansies, Petunia, Phlox, Snapdragons, Verbena, Viola, and Zinnia

Perennials

A perennial is a plant that does not keep a woody skeleton above ground all year. The plant dies to the ground and re-emerges in the spring after living underground.

You can count on perennials.  Dating back to 1890, perennials have long been popular with gardeners.  They are relatively easy to grow and offer a wide variety of colors, forms, and textures.  Perennials promise to deliver with vibrant flowers and foliage.  When you plant perennials in the right spot in your garden and properly care for them, perennials will return year after year.

Here is a list of some of the perennials we generally have in stock at Grass Root Gardens - Astilbe, Bee Balm, Black-Eyed Susan, Blanket Flower, Crocosmia, Columbine, Coneflower, Coral Bells, Coreopsis, Daylily, Delphinium, Foam Flower, Hosta, Hucheria, Joe-Pye Weed, Ligularia, Lungwort, Lupine, Pinks, Red Hot Poker, Sedum, Yarrow, and MANY more

Every gardener knows that under the cloak of winter lies a miracle. . .
a seed waiting to sprout, a bulb opening to the light, a bud straining
to unfurl.  And the anticipation nurtures our dream.
